| 1. A magnetic recording medium, comprising:
a) a substrate;
b) a magnetically hard recording layer having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy disposed over said substrate;
c) a magnetically soft underlayer disposed between said magnetically hard recording layer and said substrate; and
d) a magnetic pinning layer disposed between said substrate and said soft magnetic underlayer, where said magnetic pinning
layer has perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
