1. In a wireless communication system having an infrastructure comprising a first network element and a second network element, wherein the second network element comprises a second transcoder and resides in a radio access network and the first network element comprises a first transcoder and is external to the radio access network, a method for controlling a transcoding of voice during a communication session comprising:
determining a first bearer format type supported by the first transcoder;
determining a second bearer format type mutually supported by a mobile station and the second network element;
determining that the first bearer format type is the same as the second bearer format type; and
selecting one of the first transcoder and the second transcoder to transcode the voice based on the first bearer format type and the second bearer format type, wherein the first and second network elements are in a voice path of the mobile station.
