1. A method of examining a sample, comprising:
exposing of the sample to a pump pulse of electromagnetic radiation for a first period of time, defined as the pump pulse duration,
exposing of the sample to a stimulant pulse of electromagnetic radiation for a second period of time that is shorter than, or equal in duration to, the pump pulse duration, thereby producing a signal pulse of electromagnetic radiation for a third period of time which extends beyond the stimulant pulse duration,
interfering the signal pulse with a reference pulse of electromagnetic radiation, and
demodulating a portion of the signal pulse that is not conterminous with the stimulant pulse duration.
