1. A temperature sensing device comprising:
a) a housing including a display;
b) an extension at least 1.5 inches long extending from the housing, the extension having with a proximal section at the housing and an opposed distal section, the distal section being movable relative to the housing;
c) a temperature sensor at the distal section of the extension for sensing the temperature of a target material and providing an output related to the temperature of the target material; and
d) a connector from the sensor to the housing for transmitting the output to the housing,
wherein the housing has a selector key for the type of material of a container containing the target material.
