1. A controller for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of cylinders, the controller being configured to:
receive a request signal indicative of a request to increase the speed of the internal combustion engine from zero;
in dependence on receiving the request signal, provide an output signal to cause the internal combustion engine to be rotated; and
maintain in a closed position an intake valve of at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine during at least a first intake stroke of the at least one cylinder.
