1. A method to receive real time data at a receiver at a first location from an implantable medical device at a second location, comprising:
connecting the receiver at the first location to a transmitter at the second location that is external to the implantable medical device via a communications network;
determining a data transfer rate of said connection between the receiver and the transmitter over the communications network;
using the data transfer rate to determine a sampling rate for the real time data received by the transmitter from the implantable medical device;
sampling real time data from the implantable medical device at the determined sampling rate; and
receiving the real time data from said transmitter via said communications network.
