1. A method of providing a dispersion-affecting element for affecting group delay dispersion in an optical communication system, the method comprising:
coupling an optical signal into the dispersion-affecting element;
obtaining a measurement related to a response of the dispersion-affecting element to the optical signal;
in a data storage element, recording characterization information related to the measurement, where the characterization information is derived from the measurement by estimating the effects of the response of the dispersion-affecting element upon modulation applied to the optical signal; and
providing information stored in the data storage element to the dispersion-affecting element, where the characterization information is made available for use during eventual deployment of the dispersion-affecting element in an optical communication link.
