1. A field emission electron source comprising:
a conductive base having a top;
a carbon nanotube having a first end and a second end, the first end being electrically and mechanically connected with the top of the conductive base, the second end extending outwardly away from the top of the conductive base; and
a modifying layer being uniformly distributed and coated onto at least the second end of the carbon nanotube, at least part of the modifying layer penetrating the second end, the work function of the modifying layer being lower than that of the carbon nanotube;
wherein the top is a tapered;
wherein there is only one carbon nanotube, the carbon nanotube is electrically connected to the tapered top of the conductive base and is co-linear with a center line of the conductive base.
