1. A horse boot comprising:
a shell that includes a sole, an upper, and a tongue having a free end extending upward from a front side of the shell;
a replaceable gaiter attached to the upper of the shell; and
a restraining mechanism for strapping the shell of the boot on a hoof of a horse;
wherein the gaiter includes a mounting section for releasable connection of the gaiter to a heel portion of the upper, and a wrapping section for releasably wrapping around a pastern of the horse, said wrapping section enclosing the pastern solely above a front hairline and below a fetlock of the horse, whereby said hairline is in a gap between a front lower edge of the gaiter and an upper edge of the tongue.
