1. Fused ceramic grains having the following average chemical composition by weight, in percentages by weight on the basis of the oxides:
Al2O3: 93% to 98.5%;
MgO: 2.2 to 6.5%;
SiO2:<0.1%;
other impurities:<0.4%,
wherein the maximum carbon content is 200 ppm, and
wherein the grains consist of corundum crystals surrounded by a nonstoichiometric MgO-Al2O3spinel phase.
