1. An optical system, comprising:
a light-transmitting substrate having a plurality of surfaces including at least first and second major surfaces;
a folding prism having a plurality of surfaces including at least a first surface and a second surface;
a polarizing beamsplitter associated with the folding prism; and
an optical module comprising:
a source associated with one of the surfaces of the folding prism for producing polarized light waves, and
at least one collimating element associated with the polarizing beamsplitter,
wherein the polarized light waves produced by the source are coupled into the folding prism by the first surface of the folding prism and are coupled out of the folding prism by the second surface of the folding prism and are collimated by the collimating element so as to produce collimated polarized light waves, and wherein the collimated polarized light waves are coupled into the light-transmitting substrate by the polarizing beamsplitter.
