1. A local exercise device comprising:
one or more load sensors;
an electromagnetic resistance unit;
a control interface configured to:
send a report of a state of the local exercise device based at least in part on an output from the one or more load sensors;
receive an update based on a state of a remote exercise device, wherein the state of the remote exercise device includes load data; and
a controller that causes the electromagnetic resistance unit to change state in reaction to the received update based at least in part on a proportioning algorithm that scales the load data included in the received update to match a first user associated with the local exercise device and a second user associated with the remote exercise device at a nominal strength rating.
