| 1. An apparatus comprising:
a multi-user detector to decompose a received signal into respective contributions from a plurality of mobile stations that
share time and frequency resources for pilot transmissions, wherein said received signal comprises a plurality of patterns
of pilot symbols corresponding to said plurality of mobile stations;
an estimator to estimate channel quality values of a set of pilot signals received at different, respective, frequency slots
of an uplink channel; and
an allocator to allocate an uplink frequency band for said uplink channel based on said estimated channel quality values.
