1. A carbonaceous material that has been loaded or preconditioned with at least one ionic organic species selected from the group consisting of: solid carbon carboxyl species, solid carbon hydroxyl species, solid carbon sulfonate species, solid carbon phenolic species, solid carbon lactone species, solid carbon amine species, solid carbon pyridenium species, cetylpyridinium, vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium, choline, and alkyl quaternary ammonium; and
at least one metal, alkaline earth metal, or halide.
