| 1. A quaternary onium aromatic sulfonate of the formula:
wherein each R1 independently is an aliphatic, substituted or unsubstituted, radical; each X is phosphorus; “a” is 0 or 1, and “b” is 0 or
1 with the proviso that (a+b) is equal to 1 or 2; G1 is an aromatic group; E is a bis(carbonyloxyalkyl) polydiorganosiloxane or an ether linkage; each Y1 independently is hydrogen, a monovalent hydrocarbon group, alkenyl, allyl, halogen, bromine, chlorine, nitro, or OR, wherein
R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group; “q” represents any integer from and including zero through the number of positions on
G1 available for substitution; “t” represents an integer equal to one; “s” represents an integer equal to one; and “u” represents
an integer equal to one; with the proviso that when E is an ether linkage, then G1 is a phenyl group, and each Y1 independently is a C1 to C20 linear or branched alkyl group; and with the proviso that when E is a bis(carbonyloxyalkyl)polydiorganosiloxane, then “a”
and “b” each has a value of 1.
