1. A compound that is a near-infrared (NIR) absorbing dye, wherein the compound is

or a rotational or conformational isomer or a salt thereof; wherein
L1, L2, L3, L5, L6, and L7 are substituted or unsubstituted methines, wherein the optional substituents are independently C1-6 alkyl or C2-6 alkenyl; or L1 and L3, or L3 and L5, or L5 and L7 may be linked with C2-4 alkylene or C2-4 alkenylene substituents;
RA1, RA2, RA3, RA4, RB1, RB2, RB3, and RB4 are each independently H, deutrium, or tritium, an C1-12 alkyl, —[CH2—CH2—O-]1-6R10, C2-12 alkenyl, polyglycol, optionally substituted 5- or 10-membered aryl or heteroaryl group, halo, nitro, cyano, —(C0-12alkyl) sulfonate or a salt thereof, —(C0-12alkyl) sulfate or a salt thereof, —(C0-12alkyl)phophate or a salt thereof, —(C0-12alkyl)hydroxy, —(C0-12alkyl)alkoxy, —(C0-12alkyl)aryloxy, —(C0-12alkyl)NHSO3R10 or a salt thereof, —(C0-12alkyl)COOR10 or a salt thereof, —(C0-12alkyl)CON(R10)2, —(C0-12alkyl)N(R10)2 or a salt thereof, or —(C0-12alkyl)borate;
is independently 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4;
R10 is independently H or C1-6 alkyl; and
Y is an optionally substituted cationic heteroaryl ring moiety.
