1. A failure detection device for detecting a failure of a rotation angle detection sensor which detects a rotational angle of a shift operating member for establishing one of plural ranges in an automatic transmission, wherein the sensor includes a first detection element having an output which increases as the rotational angle increases and a second detection element having an output which decreases as the rotational angle increases, the failure detection device comprising:
detecting means for detecting a total of the outputs of the first and second detection elements, for determining a difference between the detected total of outputs and a total of the outputs of the first and second detection elements predetermined for normal operation of the first and second detection elements, and for detecting a failure of the sensor by comparing the determined difference with a predetermined value set on the basis of an angular interval between adjacent ranges included in the plural ranges.
