| 1. An illumination device for microscopes comprising:
a metal-halide light source for producing light;
a cardioid condenser;
an adjustable annular diaphragm including a variable sized opening for passage of light;
a spherical lens; and
an iris opening; wherein the light from the metal-halide light source enters the cardioid condenser through the variable sized opening of the
annular diaphragm, wherein the spherical lens focuses the light toward the iris opening, and wherein the light exits the iris
opening at an angle and comes to a focal point with a spot size and continues past the focal point producing background light.
