| 1. An image processing unit comprising:
a processor unit configured to receive an incoming video signal; and
a control unit configured to define image frames from the video signal, the image frames having bit planes in a plurality
of spatial segments for manifestation on a spatial light modulator, the control unit further configured to define on and off
states for a solid state light source;
wherein the control unit modulates the solid state light source at a modulated level during at least one bit plane such that
illumination of the solid state light source at the modulated level is equally applied during the at least one bit plane for
each of the plurality of spatial segments.
