| 1. A method for power conservation in a portable communication device capable of communication on either of a first communication
path and a second communication path, the method comprising the steps of:
detecting signals of a first communication path;
operating in a first communication mode on the first communication path;
deregistering from the second communication path while operating in the first communication mode on the first communication
path;
while deregistered from the second communication path, monitoring at least one housekeeping channel on the second communication
path at times separated by a predetermined time interval; and
switching operation from the first communication mode to a second communication mode on the second communication path in response
to a predetermined event.
