1. A method of communicating between storage controllers in a storage area network, the method comprising:
receiving into a first storage controller a data operation from a host computer;
associating a sequence number atomically with the data operation; and
marking the data operation as valid for transmission from the first storage controller to a second storage controller after the sequence number is atomically associated with the data operation.
