1. A glucopyranosyloxybenzylbenzene derivative represented by the general formula:

wherein P represents a hydrogen atom or a group forming a prodrug; R1 represents an amino group, a mono or di(lower alkyl)-substituted amino group, a cyano group, a carbamoyl group, a carbamoyl(lower alkyl) group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl-substituted (lower alkyl) group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl-substituted (lower alkoxy) group, a carboxy(lower alkyl) group, or a carboxy(lower alkoxy) group; R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R3 represents a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a lower alkylthio group, a lower alkenyloxy group, an aralkyloxy group, a lower alkoxy-substituted (lower alkyl) group, a lower alkoxy-substituted (lower alkoxy) group, a lower alkoxy-substituted (lower alkylthio) group, a carboxy group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl group, a cyano group, an aralkyloxy(lower alkyl) group, a cyano(lower alkyl) group, a carbamoyl group, a carbamoyl(lower alkyl) group, an amino group, a mono or di(lower alkyl)-substituted amino group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl-substituted (lower alkyl) group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl-substituted (lower alkoxy) group, a carboxy(lower alkyl) group, a carboxy(lower alkoxy) group, or a group represented by the general formula: P2—O—A2— wherein P2 represents a hydrogen atom or a group forming a prodrug; and A2 represents a lower alkylene group, a lower alkyleneoxy group, a lower alkylenethio group, or a lower alkenylene group; and with the proviso at least one of P and P2 represents a group forming a prodrug or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
