1. A device for use in a fabric with a host and a storage unit connected to the fabric, the device comprising:
a port for coupling to the fabric;
means coupled to said port for receiving a frame addressed to a storage unit, the frame including a header and a payload, the payload including a storage header and a storage payload;
means coupled to said receiving means for performing encryption operations on said storage payload of said received frame and not on said storage header; and
means coupled to said encryption operations means and said port for providing said encrypted frame to said port for transmission to the storage unit.
