1. A water-soluble polymer comprising:
a branched polymer backbone having at least one terminus bonded to a branching atom through a hydrolytically stable linkage, the branching atom being covalently bonded to at least two reactive groups, each reactive group comprising a reactive moiety, wherein the branched polymer backbone comprises methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) disubstituted lysine.
