1. A method of increasing cytosolic Ca2+ levels in an airway epithelial cell comprising contacting P2X receptors on the cell with an effective amount of Zn2+ and one or more of the following molecules: ATP; α, β-methylene-ATP; benzoyl-benzoyl-ATP; ATPγS; or AMPPNP, wherein there is a sustained elevation in cytosolic Ca2+ levels in the cell.
