| 1. An apparatus for controlling a variable valve mechanism provided for varying an open characteristic of an intake valve
of an internal combustion engine, comprising:
a first control unit configured to control the variable valve mechanism in accordance with operating conditions of the internal
combustion engine;
a second control unit that controls the open characteristic of the intake valve to such an open characteristic that a flow
velocity of intake air passing through the intake valve becomes almost sound velocity;
a detecting unit configured to detect an amount of air passing through the intake valve, when the open characteristic of the
intake valve is controlled by the second control unit;
a setting unit configured to set a correction value for correcting the open characteristic of the intake valve, on the basis
of the detected amount of the passing air; and
a correcting unit configured to correct a control operation performed by the first control unit on the basis of the correction
value.
