1. A method of determining an event on a wire comprising:
receiving a signal on the wire;
performing compensation processing of said signal producing a compensated signal, wherein said compensation processing includes performing attenuation compensation in accordance with a multivariate function that depends simultaneously on frequency and a length of a conductor on which said signal propagates;
performing event identification processing of said compensated signal to identify at least one event; and
classifying said at least one event using a library of circuit models, wherein, if said at least one event indicates a fault condition, said classifying includes classifying a type of fault corresponding to said at least one event, wherein said classifying includes comparing information about said compensated signal to at least one set of data representing a first type of wire defect, said at least one set of data being generated using a cable model simulating said first type of wire defect, wherein if said at least one event indicates a fault condition, providing a result regarding said fault condition including at least one of providing said result to a user display, providing said result to storage, and providing an indicator that a fault has been detected.
