| 1. A method comprising:
detecting passage of one or more reference indicators on a grade-rod reference surface through one or more detection regions
positioned proximate to the grade-rod reference surface;
computing information associated with relative movement of the one or more detection regions and the grade-rod reference surface
based at least in part on the one or more reference indicators detected; and
reporting the information according to a user-selected unit of measure.
