1. A method for measuring coordinates on a workpiece using a coordinate probe movably connected to a positioning platform by means of one or more actuators, the position of the probe relative to the positioning platform being measurable by probe encoders, the method involving, in any suitable order, the steps of:
moving the positioning platform with respect to a fixed reference to a predetermined location;
controlling said actuators to move the coordinate probe relative to the positioning platform, while keeping the positioning platform immobile in the fixed reference, to sense the surface of a workpiece in a local workspace accessible to coordinate probe;
obtaining a local measurement of the workpiece by combining said measure data with probe position data provided by said probe encoders;
moving the positioning platform with respect to a fixed reference to a different location.
