| 1. An optical scanning device for scanning an object, the device comprising:
an excitation light source operable to illuminate the object to be scanned;
an image detector operable to detect excited emission rays through illumination of the object to be scanned by the excitation
light source and includes imaging optics that dictate a focal distance;
a distance checking indicator;
a distance sensor operable to measure a distance between the optical scanning device and the object to be scanned; and
a control device that is operable to activate the distance checking indicator when the control device determines, as a function
of the measured distance, that the image detector is positioned at or near the focal distance.
