1. A method of monitoring a network device, said method comprising:
enabling a data path within said network device, said data path comprising a plurality of elements on a linecard in said network device and an interface in said network device, wherein data packets are moved on said data path using said plurality of elements and communicated to and from the linecard via said interface; and
executing a process within said network device for detecting a defective element in said plurality of elements, wherein said process is executed within said data path allowing a defect in said data path to be detected, localized and recovered from.
