Benchmarking

Benchmarking is the continuous and systematic process of identifying, analyzing, and adapting industries' best practices that will lead an organization to superior performance.

(Spendolini 1992)

Many people know what benchmarking is and how to use it. Many people think they know what benchmarking is and aren't quite sure what to do. Which one are you? Do you follow the benchmarking methodology and protocols or are you an "Industrial Tourist"? If you use the benchmarking methodology correcting it can be a powerful tool in helping with process improvements, change management, continuous improvement, process redesign and/or even survival. But don't reinvent the wheel, there is a wealth of knowledge already available and most individuals and agencies are willing to share.

As you review the slide presentations and the workbook you will notice that there are different styles of benchmarking studies and different ways that they can be performed.

The Classic Benchmarking Slide presentation will walk you through the four phases and all the steps to follow during a classic benchmarking study. This style of study can take 6-9 months. The Reality vs. Classic Benchmarking Slide presentation will walk you through a different style of benchmarking. This style is used widely because of time and resource constraints. This style as illustrated in the presentation can take as little as 36 days to complete; but be advised this is not really a true benchmarking study.

The workbook provides you with step by step instruction on how to perform a classic benchmarking study. It provides you with worksheets, scripts, and examples that are so important in performing a study.
