TOP PATENTING ORGANIZATIONS
Calendar Year 1995
This report lists the organizations receiving the most patents for
invention (i.e., utility patents) during the 1995 CALENDAR year.
In 1995, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) received
1,383 patents, more than any other organization. IBM again set a
new record for the most patents ever granted in one year to a non-Federal
organization. This marks the second straight year in which
IBM has received more patents than any other organization, and the
third straight year in which IBM has received more patents than any
other non-Federal organization. Canon Kabushiki Kaisha's 1,087
patents ranked second among organizations receiving patents for the
year. The U.S. Government dropped to 3rd place with 1,026 patents.
Rounding out the top five patenting organizations were Motorola,
Inc.with 1,012 patents and NEC Corporation with 1,005 patents.
Once again, two U.S. corporations are included among the top five
patenting organizations for 1995 and four U.S. organizations are
included among the top eleven organizations receiving patents
during the year. All other organizations among the top eleven are
Japanese corporations. The other U.S. corporations among the top
eleven patenting organizations for 1995 are Eastman Kodak Company
(772 patents) and General Electric Company (758 patents), which are
ranked tenth and eleventh, respectively.
The identities of the top eleven patenting organizations remain
unchanged for 1995. Among U.S. corporations, Motorola jumped from
tenth to fourth place while General Electric dropped from fifth to
eleventh place. Kodak dropped from ninth to tenth place. Among
Japanese corporations, NEC rose from eighth to fifth place while
Hitachi dropped from fourth to eighth place. Matsushita rose from
eleventh to ninth place.

utility patents in 1995 is shown below.

patent grant and does not include changes in ownership which occur after
the patent grant. Where more than one assignee (owner) exists, patents
are attributed to the first-named assignee.
No attempt has been made to combine data based on subsidiary
relationships. However, where possible, spelling variations and
variations based on name changes have been merged into a single name
(e.g., ESSO to EXXON). While every effort is made to accurately identify
all organizational entities and report data by a single organization name,
achievement of a totally clean record is not expected, particularly in
view of the variations which occur in many corporate identifications.
