General Patent Statistics Reports Available For Viewing
Notes for Users
- PTMT reports display patent statistics and data by calendar year (1 January to 31 December).
- For most users, PTMT reports displaying utility patent statistics will be the ones of interest - utility patents are also known as “patents for inventions.”
- The most recently updated PTMT reports include data for patents granted through 2015.
Reports By Patented Technology
Selected Technology Reports and Technology Workload Reports
PTMT Selected Technology Reports profile the general patenting activity in a technology area and are updated periodically. These reports consist of the following parts:
- Part A1 provides a count for patents (i.e., “patents for inventions”) granted during the reporting period. The patent grants are distributed by origin, as determined by the residence of the first-named inventor, and by year of grant. Yearly counts are shown for each U.S. state and each foreign country of origin. The grants also are distributed separately by the general category of ownership (e.g., corporate-owned, government-owned, or individual-owned). Annual counts are displayed for each of the last 14 years.
- Part A2 displays the same breakouts as in Part A1 but with the same patents distributed by the year of application.
- Part B shows the national and international corporations, government agencies, and other organizations that have received the most patents during the reporting period. Patent grants are distributed by year of grant and by year of application with annual counts displayed for each of the last 14 years.
PTMT Technology Workload Reports profile the characteristics of utility patents that have been identified based on the "primary" patent classification assigned to each patent - each patent receives one, and only one, primary patent classification. The three Technology Workload Reports are useful for displaying overall utility patenting activity, as divided between the listed categories. These reports are updated periodically and consist of the following parts:
- Part A1 provides a count for utility patents (i.e., “patents for inventions”) granted during the reporting period. The totals are broken down by origin, U.S. and foreign, as determined by the residence of the first-named inventor, and by year of grant. Yearly counts are shown for the 36 foreign countries receiving the most U.S. patents during the period. The grants also are distributed separately by the general category of ownership (e.g., corporate-owned, government-owned, or individual-owned). Annual counts are displayed for each of the last 14 years.
- Part A2 displays the same breakouts as in Part A1 but with the same utility patents distributed by the year of application.
- Part B shows the national and international corporations, government agencies, and other organizations that have received the most utility patents during the reporting period. Patent grants are distributed by year of grant and by year of application with annual counts displayed for each of the last 14 years.
