Element Markup Instructions: For PCT patent applications, the document number is 14 alphanumeric positions including slashes.
For U.S. patent applications, the document number is a fixed length of eight digits. The first two digits are the series code and the following six digits are the serial number, left-padded with zeros.
For U.S. patent grants, the document number is a fixed length of eight characters which has the following format:
- Design (column 1 Constant "D", columns 2 - 8 7-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Design SIR (columns 1 - 2 Constant "HD", columns 3 - 8 6-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Plant SIR (columns 1 - 2 Constant "HP", columns 3 - 8 6-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Utility SIR (column 1 Constant "H", columns 2 - 8 7-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Plant (columns 1 - 2 Constant "PP", columns 3 - 8 6-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Reissue (columns 1 - 2 Constant "RE", columns 3 - 8 6-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Utility invention (columns 1 - 8 8-digit numeric, right justified, with leading zeros)
- Reexamination certificate (Reexamination certificates retain the document number of the original patent upon which they are based.
