MODE OF PROTECTING NOTES, CHECKS, &c., FROM ALTERATION

Specification of Letters Patent No. 871, dated August 3, 1838.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EBENEZER WATSON, of the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new mode of protection against alteration of bank-notes, bills of credit, circulating notes, certificates of stack, and other instruments of writing thereof; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description.

The nature of my invention consists in engraving, printing or in any way expressing the sum in large letters, words or figures on the face of the note, &c., and so disposing the words or other matter of the body of the note, &c., as therewith to fill up the spaces between such large letters, words or figures, and between the parts thereof, but not to cover such letters words or figures or parts thereof, either in whole or in part.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I refer to the within drawings or specimens marked A, B, C.
