Jefferson Building Conference Center

The Public User's Meeting was held at 2:00 p.m. in the 1st floor conference room 1D70/1D80 in the Jefferson Building at 500 Dulany Street on the USPTO campus in Alexandria, Virginia. Martha Sneed, Manager of PISD, chaired the meeting. There were 7 members of the public in attendance.

Announcements

Lighting reduction on the 1st floor of the Public Search Facility (PSF) has been implemented per users request. Changes to reduce 2nd floor lighting are still pending. Cost proposal to turn off seven consecutive rows of lighting still not received.

USPTO will be closed on Monday, Dec. 24 – Christmas Eve as well as Tuesday, Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

Public Search Facility Update

Terry Howard reminded the public that security badges are due for renewal by the end of the month.

A new menu item has been added to the Trademark tab on UPWS. Users now have a direct route to access images of trademark registrations. Access is also available from the USPTO website, but the new TMRegCerts tab provides a direct link to the data on the web.

Question: Can the badge renewal be done as a group? Probably not, but this is Security Office procedure so it needs to be checked out with them.

UPWS issues: A member of the public said that when UPWS does not close properly, EAST does not close leaving the user's personal workspace up and available to others who subsequently log onto that workstation.

There was also a problem with a user who saved his workspace but then could not access it the next day. He could view it but not open it for work. He tried saving as new workspace option but that did not solve the problem. Finally a technician was able to open it for the user to be able to work with it.

Finally, a public user is getting blank screens in PubPAIR – it has occurred 3 different times in a row. Doug Salser will check into these problems.

Question: Why doesn't the PSF have a bulletin board for the public's use? Can one be put up? A public bulletin board will not be put up in the Public Search Facility. The only bulletin boards are for postings by PSF management to inform the public about service and operations issues.

Public Records Division Update

Outside construction around South Tower is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2008.

No contract has been awarded for USPTO move from South Tower to new space. There have been several bids received but no decision as yet.

Question: What is the priority for corrections to certified documents? How much time is needed for corrections to be processed? Selected documents in TICRS goal is 25 days. Can the number of days be less? Amanda Putnam will check on that with the Manager of Document Services.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30pm. The next meeting is January 16, 2008, in the Jefferson building conference room(s) 1D70/1D80 at 2:00pm.
