USPTO Launches Recruitment Effort to Hire Veterans
Agency Seeks to More than Double the Percentage of Veteran Hires for the Patent Examiner Corps
WASHINGTON ─ The United States Patent and Trademark Office announced today that in response to the President’s call to hire veterans, the office is launching an intensive recruitment effort to increase veteran hiring in its patent examiner corps. The program will feature broad outreach and support to attract veterans interested in pursuing careers in patent examination.
“The USPTO is strongly committed to hiring veterans and their family members into our workforce to benefit from the skills and dedication to public service of those who have served our country while also honoring their military service,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO David Kappos. “Our agency strives to be a model employer by hiring and retaining a workforce that reflects the diversity found throughout America, and we are pleased to announce this program for attracting veterans.”
The USPTO plans to hire more than 1,500 patent examiners in FY2012 and has set a target of 10% of those hires to be filled by veterans. This target represents more than a doubling of the percentage of veteran hires for the patent examiner corps.
To achieve its FY12 veteran’s hiring goals, USPTO is implementing a comprehensive recruitment plan aimed at attracting veterans and their family members to job opportunities through sources including job postings, resource sites, career centers, and career fairs. The USPTO has engaged military career placement offices on the local and national level and the agency will hold special information sessions at veteran career centers and veteran career fairs to attract veterans. Job announcements will be posted on websites specializing in veterans, and USPTO will partner with veteran organizations to market the agency.
