USPTO Wins Excellence.gov Award
PRESS RELEASE
Trademark Electronic Application System Selected One of Top 5 Government Program Winners
The Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and
Trademark Office (USPTO) announced today that it is a recipient
of the 2005 Excellence.gov Award for demonstrating best
practices in federal e-government implementations. The Industry
Advisory Council and the American Council for Technology
selected the agency’s Trademark Electronic Application
System (TEAS) as one of top five winners for its high customer
satisfaction, strong market segment penetration, broad
stakeholder acceptance, and improved program utilization over
time.
“Trademarks help consumers distinguish among products and services and are often a business’s most valuable asset,” noted Jon Dudas, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO. “Timely trademark registration is an important component of an organization’s business plan, and TEAS, which allows trademark applications to be filed electronically, makes the process simpler, faster, and more efficient.”
TEAS is an interactive, Web-based system that anyone, regardless of experience, can use to file a federal trademark application. It improves the efficiency of the application process and reduces the processing time. In the six years since electronic filing first became available, over 560,000 applications have been filed electronically for the registration of a trademark. Currently about 80 percent of trademark applications are filed electronically.
