Secretary of Commerce Don Evans Names Two New Members to Patent Advisory Panel

Washington - Prominent patent attorneys William L. LaFuze of Houston and Albert L. Jacobs, Jr. of New York City were named today to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Public Advisory Committee. They will serve three-year terms on the panel, which was created by the 1999 American Inventors Protection Act to advise the Director of the USPTO on the agency's operations, including its goals, performance, budget and user fees. The nine-member committee is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Secretary of Commerce.

"I am delighted that these outstanding members of the intellectual property community have agreed to serve on the Patent Public Advisory Committee at this crucial time in the USPTO's history," Secretary Evans commented. "Their knowledge and expertise will contribute greatly to helping us maintain the agency's proud tradition of fostering innovation in America."

William L. LaFuze is a partner and co-chair of the Intellectual Property/Technical Litigation Practice at Vinson and Elkins. He is a past president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the National Council of Patent Law Associations and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation.

Albert L. Jacobs, Jr. has over 30 years experience in patent law. He is currently a Shareholder and Chair, National Intellectual Property Practice and Co-Chair, National Biotechnology Practice in the New York office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP. In his practice, Jacobs has concentrated on the areas of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, chemical and health care.
