USPTO Director to Showcase Inventions Related to Homeland Security

Washington - The Department of Commerce's U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) plays a vital role in advancing the technology that will help the United States win the war on terrorism and strengthen homeland protections. The President's budget request for USPTO provides the agency with an additional $239 million to hire the skilled scientists and engineers needed to examine the increasingly sophisticated inventions in computing and biotechnology, two rapidly-advancing technologies that have a great impact in ensuring homeland security.

The exhibit will showcase nine inventions, including large object x-ray technology and contraband chemical detection and containment systems that can be used to protect America and Americans from terrorists. Inventors, representatives from organizations licensing the inventions, and USPTO examiners who granted the patents on the inventions, will join Under Secretary Jim Rogan at the opening of the exhibit.

NOTE: Media should enter the 14th Street entrance.
