USPTO Has New Deputy CFO And Comptroller
Sandra Weisman, formerly Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Systems at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), became Deputy Chief Financial Officer at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on September 25, 2000.
"Sandra Weisman brings to the USPTO a superlative record of Government service and a wide range of experience that will be helpful to the agency as we face the challenges of the years ahead," said Q. Todd Dickinson, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Before going to the VA, Weisman was on loan to the National Performance Review (NPR). She served as the team leader on the Reinventing Support Services Team responsible for the NPR recommendations on streamlining federal procurement, travel, printing, personal property, real property and the General Services Administration.
In recognition of Weisman’s extraordinary accomplishments, she received the Senior Executive Service’s Distinguished Presidential Rank Award. Weisman has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in public administration from Arizona State University.
USPTO, a user fee-funded agency of the United States, within the Department of Commerce, administers laws relevant to granting patents and registering trademarks. The Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office advises the Secretary of Commerce and other Federal departments and agencies on intellectual property policy matters. Over 6 million patents have been issued since the first patent in 1790 and 2.3 million trademarks have been registered since the first in 1870. Last year USPTO issued 161,000 patents and registered 104,000 trademarks.
