Patent Examining Groups

The Deputy Commissioner for Patent Operations oversee all patent examining functions in the seven Patent Technology Centers. Patent Operations has more than 3500 highly skilled scientists and engineers. Patent Operations provides administrative oversight to and coordinates the activities of Technology Centers 1600, 1700, 2100, 2600, 2800, 2900, 3600, and 3700.

  • Technology Center 1600 provides examination for patent applications including Biotechnology and Organic fields.
  • Technology Center 1700 provides examination for patent applications including Chemical and Materials Engineering fields.
  • Technology Center 2100 provides examination for patent applications including Computer Architecture Software and Information Security.
  • Technology Center 2600 provides examination for patent applications including Communications.
  • Technology Center 2800 provides examination for patent applications including Semiconductors, Electrical and Optical Systems and Components.
  • Technology Center 2900 provides examination for patent applications including Designs.
  • Technology Center 3600 provides examination for patent applications including Transportation, Electronic Commerce, Construction, Agriculture, Licensing and Review.
  • Technology Center 3700 provides examination for patent applications including Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Products.

Office of Patent Publication

This office is responsible for:

  • Scheduling and managing the processing and movement of allowed patent application files
  • Administering a data capture contract that produces weekly searchable and image databases of issued patents for USPTO and external customer use
  • Assembling and mailing the patent grants
  • The production of the Patent Official Gazette
  • Preparing Certificates of Corrections
  • The production of weekly searchable and image Pre-Grant Publication files, through the Patent Data Capture (PADACAP) contractor
