The Commerce Department's Patent and Trademark Office, in conjunction with its Trilateral partners-the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Japanese Patent Office (JPO)-today announced the availability of CD-ROM software which will set a common standard for user interface and authoring among the world's three largest patent offices. This new software will facilitate faster development and publishing of CD-ROM intellectual property information products.

The Trilateral Offices, who developed the Mixed Mode Software Application (MIMOSA) product, plan to distribute the user interface and authoring software as widely and as inexpensively as possible to anyone who requests it. In practice, publishers are expected to provide the MIMOSA user interface software on the data-carrying CD-ROM at no extra cost.

The MIMOSA user interface software, which runs under Microsoft Windows, and MIMOSA authoring software, which runs under UNIX, will be distributed together for 300 DEM (or the equivalent prices in yen). The price for the software includes electronic documentation, the only support provided with the product.

When the software is used to publish an intellectual property application, some benefits (in view of the low purchase price) may be sought from the publisher by the Trilateral Offices. For example, the publisher may be requested to provide discs to the Trilateral Offices and their accredited libraries at a discounted price, with the scale of discount to be applied on an individual case-by-case basis. In some cases, the discount might be a nominal 10% in addition to any normal "library use" discount offered by the publisher for similar products. Publishers producing discs containing patent abstracts of Japan (PAJ) might not be asked for the discount since the PAJ discs have already been produced and distributed widely free-of-charge by JPO.
